.| Workshop topic: When the Whole Town Cries: Care for a Community Facing Loss |
Whether through a mass shooting, a popular student’s death in a car crash, or a devastating wildfire, individuals and families are not alone in experiencing grief. Loss is also experienced acutely in entire communities. Some cope by lining the streets or fill arenas to honor the life of a person who is often remembered as “larger than life,” while others seem paralyzed to do anything productive. Through contemporary research, real case studies and practical strategies, we will discover unique ways for addressing grief when the entire community is impacted by the loss.
Objectives. At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to…
- Describe the unique attributes of grief after mass tragedy
- Differentiate common trauma and grief experiences for people impacted by mass tragedy
- Utilize proven strategies to assist impacted individuals and groups
